Compatibility and Behavior
The Banded Pipefish (Dunckerocampus dactyliophorus, still widely sold as Doryrhamphus dactyliophorus) is a living ribbon, one of the many wonders of the aquatic world. An exceptionally slender, elongated body is encased in bony rings rather than scales and wrapped in evenly spaced dark reddish-brown to black bands over a cream to pale yellow background, running from the tubular snout all the way to the tail. The showpiece is the paddle-shaped caudal fin, which flares out in bright red or pink with a white margin, giving it an almost banner-like flourish as it moves, and it moves in a slow, hovering way driven by rapid fluttering of the tiny dorsal fin rather than the body. In the wild it shelters in caves and crevices along reef slopes, often orienting itself upside down against cave ceilings, a quirk it usually keeps up in captivity. It's completely reef safe and won't touch corals, clams, ornamental shrimp, or cleanup crew, feeding instead on tiny zooplankton drawn through its pinhole mouth. That mouth is the whole challenge, and the reason this is an expert-only fish: it does best in a mature system with a thriving copepod and amphipod population. Tankmates must be equally slow and gentle, like small gobies, dragonets, firefish, cardinalfish, and seahorses, since faster feeders like tangs, damsels, and wrasses will strip the water of food before it gets a chance. Just as important, avoid aggressive corals and anemones with strong stinging tentacles, along with large hermits, crabs, and big shrimp, any of which can injure or capture it. It's gregarious and generally does well in a group of its own kind, though occasional squabbling between individuals is possible.

Aquarium Requirements
A mature tank of 30 gallons for a single specimen or 50 gallons and up for a group works well, and the key requirement is that the system has been running at least six months so a self-sustaining microfauna population is established. Aquascape with plenty of live rock arranged into shaded caves, overhangs, and vertical crevices that mimic the outer reef walls it naturally hides in, and add generous macroalgae to shelter copepods and give the pipefish structure to hitch near. Low, gentle flow is essential, since these are weak swimmers that get stressed and exhausted by strong pumps, and any pump intakes should be screened to prevent injury. A connected refugium is one of the single best investments for long-term success, continuously seeding the display with live pods. Feeding takes real patience: offer live copepods and vitamin-enriched baby brine shrimp several times daily, delivered slowly at a consistent spot so the fish learns where to wait, and consider training onto frozen cyclops, tiny mysis, or fish eggs once it's settled.
