Compatibility and Behavior
The Regal Angel (Pygoplites diacanthus) is one of the most coveted angels in the hobby, and the Red Sea variant is the one serious keepers hold out for. Red Sea specimens show intensely saturated yellow and blue vertical striping with clean, crisp borders, plus a strong golden-yellow chest and belly that genuinely glows under reef lighting. The face is framed by a bold blue mask and white highlights, and the dorsal and anal fins are edged in deep blue with fine patterning, all of which adds up to that unmistakably royal presence as the fish glides through the rockwork. The Red Sea distinction is more than skin deep. Compared to the more commonly collected Indonesian and Indo-Pacific Regals, Red Sea fish tend to carry richer, more solid coloration and, more importantly, are widely reported to transition to prepared foods more reliably, which is the whole ballgame with this species. Indonesian Regals often show paler or washed-out striping and a reputation for being finicky, especially through the critical acclimation period. Behaviorally, all Regals are best described as semi-aggressive, and this is not a reef-safe fish in the conventional sense: it may nip at LPS corals, clam mantles, and some softies, though individual behavior varies. A few keepers run them with carefully chosen corals and moderate success, but most will find them better suited to FOWLR or very coral-cautious mixed systems.

Aquarium Requirements
Even the hardier Red Sea strain is a fish that demands a mature, rock-stable system, so this is one to attempt only once your tank has real mileage on it. For medium to large specimens in the 3 to 5 inch range, a tank around 120 to 150 gallons with a long footprint is the target, with extra volume and rockwork always working in your favor. Aquascape with substantial, porous live rock built into caves, overhangs, and vertical faces so the angel can explore, graze natural sponges and biofilm, and slip into shaded crevices when it feels shy. Gentle to moderate, well-distributed flow and strong filtration suit it best, since this species fares far better in a low-stress environment with parameters that simply do not swing. Diet is where success is won or lost: offer a varied menu built around sponge-based angelfish preparations, rounded out with quality pellets, nori, and meaty frozen foods like mysis and finely chopped seafood. Good nutrition drives both coloration and the all-important job of settling in a finicky new arrival, and it is a big part of why the dependable Red Sea strain is so sought after in the first place.
