Bicolor Cleaner Wrasse (Labroides Bicolor)
Key Facts
Also Known As: Two-Color Cleaner Wrasse
Compatibility, Behavior, and Environment
The Bicolor Cleaner Wrasse is an active, slender reef fish that typically establishes cleaning stations where it may remove parasites and dead tissue from other fishes. In a home aquarium, it is usually peaceful toward dissimilar tank mates but can show aggression toward other wrasses or similarly shaped cleaners, especially in smaller systems. It is generally considered reef safe with corals and invertebrates, though its persistent cleaning behavior can occasionally bother slow or stressed fish, so it is best paired with healthy, moderately active community species in a larger, well-stocked reef tank. Because this species often relies on cleaning as a primary feeding strategy, it is typically recommended for experienced aquarists who can provide an established environment with plenty of suitable “clients” and supplemental feeding.
Aquarium Requirements
The Bicolor Cleaner Wrasse does best in a mature, spacious marine aquarium with ample live rock, strong circulation, and high, stable water quality. Rockwork should create ledges and overhangs where the wrasse can set up cleaning stations and retreat at night, alongside open areas for constant swimming. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is strongly advised, as this fish can jump when startled or chased. Frequent small feedings of varied meaty marine foods (such as finely chopped seafood, mysis, and enriched frozen preparations) are important to help transition individuals away from relying solely on parasites and to keep them in good condition.
