Copperband Butterfly EXPERT (Chelmon Rostratus)
Key Facts
Also Known As: Beaked Coralfish, Orange Stripe Butterfly
Compatibility, Behavior, and Environment: The Copperband Butterflyfish is generally peaceful but can be shy and requires a tank with plenty of hiding spaces to feel secure. It is not completely reef-safe as it may nip at tube worms, small mollusks, and some soft corals. However, it is highly valued for its ability to control Aiptasia, which is incredibly helpful if you have an outbreak of this pest. This species tends to do much better in more mature, well-established tanks with an abundance of live rock and food sources.
Can Be Tricky to Keep: While being one of the most popular and beautiful Butterfly species, Copperbands are notoriously difficult to get eating from one system to the next. They are known for being hit-or-miss and finicky with feeding. While we overall have a high success rate with them and while we do take the precaution of ensuring specimens in each outgoing batch are observed eating before shipping, we cannot guarantee they will still eat in your system. Mature systems with a multitude of food sources tend to have higher success rates, compared to barren environments such as QT tanks.
Aquarium Requirements: A mature tank of at least 75 gallons is necessary to provide a stable environment for the Copperband Butterflyfish. The aquarium layout should include lots of live rock for hiding and hunting, which helps in reducing stress and maintaining good health.
