Desjardini Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma Desjardinii)
Also Known As: Red Sea Sailfin Tang
Compatibility and Behavior
The Desjardini Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) is a breathtaking variant of the Sailfin Tang that brings height, pattern, and near-constant motion to a larger reef. The tall, disc-shaped body wears alternating vertical bands of cream, brown, and charcoal that break into intricate leopard-like spotting toward the rear body and fins, with yellow highlights on the tail and fin rays that really catch the light under reef lighting. When it flares its oversized dorsal and anal fins, the fish takes on that signature sail profile and looks nearly twice as tall, making for a striking centerpiece as it glides through open water.
It's worth noting how this fish differs from the similar-looking Pacific Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum). The two are close cousins and share that signature sail profile, but the Desjardini hails from the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean rather than the Pacific, and as it matures it develops more pronounced leopard-like spotting across the rear body and fins, where the Pacific Sailfin tends to show its spotting more between the vertical bands.
On temperament, Desjardini Sailfins tend to be peaceful to semi-aggressive, often coexisting well with a wide range of community fish while saving most of their attitude for other tangs and similarly shaped grazers. They're typically considered reef safe, spending much of the day grazing film and filamentous algae off rock and hard surfaces rather than picking at corals or ornamental inverts, though an underfed or stressed individual may occasionally nip. With thoughtful stocking, room to swim, and steady access to algae-rich foods, they usually settle into an active but manageable role as a standout herbivore in a mixed reef.
Aquarium Requirements
Desjardini Sailfins can grow fairly large and need generous horizontal swimming space, so they're best suited to roomy, established aquariums. Many hobbyists land on tanks in the 150-gallon range or larger for long-term care, but you can start at 90 gallons for a small specimen, bearing in mind it will need more space as it grows. Aquascape with a balance of open swimming lanes and substantial mature live rock that provides natural grazing surfaces, arches, ledges, and shaded retreats where the fish can wedge itself at night or when startled. Strong, well-oxygenated flow and robust filtration help support their active lifestyle and maintain the clean, stable water they prefer. Regular feedings of nori sheets, marine algae, and varied herbivore foods offered throughout the day will help maintain their health, curb aggression, and keep that banded and spotted pattern looking crisp.
