Halfblack Mimic Tang (Acanthurus Chronixis)
Compatibility and Behavior
The Halfblack Mimic Tang (Acanthurus chronixis) is a master of disguise, and the costume it picks is a specific one. As a juvenile it does a convincing impression of the Halfblack Angelfish, right down to the creamy front half, dark rear half, soft blue fin edging, and subtle facial markings, close enough that a quick glance in the tank can genuinely fool you. As it matures the disguise relaxes into richer smoky browns and dusky tones with softer contrast, trading the sharp angelfish look for a smoother, more conventionally tang-like appearance while keeping a hint of that half-and-half charm. For observant reefers it makes a great talking point, and watching the mimicry fade as the fish grows is part of the fun. Behaviorally it follows the usual surgeonfish pattern of peaceful to semi-aggressive, directing most of its assertiveness at other tangs and similarly shaped grazers. It is reef safe in practice, browsing film and filamentous algae off the rockwork rather than picking at corals or inverts, though a stressed or underfed individual may occasionally nip. The Halfblack Mimic captures the best of both worlds; the beauty of an angelfish, but reef-safe!
Aquarium Requirements
This is a medium-sized, active grazer that wants swimming room and a mature system with established live rock to work over. For small to medium specimens in the 1.5 to 3 inch range, a tank around 90 to 120 gallons with a long footprint is a sensible baseline, with larger volumes preferred as it fills out toward adult size. Aquascape with open lanes for cruising alongside arches and ledges for shelter, on porous rock that keeps the algae and biofilm growing. The rest is standard tang care: strong, well-oxygenated flow, robust filtration, and stable water quality. Keep nori, marine algae, and varied herbivore foods coming regularly, which holds body weight, supports a smooth transition out of the angelfish mimic pattern, and takes the edge off any aggression toward tankmates.
