Pseudo Chromis Bicolor (Pseudochromis Paccagnellae)
Also Known As: Bicolor Pseudochromis
Compatibility and Behavior The Bicolor Pseudochromis (Pseudochromis paccagnellae) is one of those small fish that delivers an outsized punch of color. The body is sharply split horizontally into two intense halves, featuring a rich royal purple and canary yellow colorway. Its body features a sleek, torpedo-shaped profile and alert, inquisitive eyes. The contrast under reef lighting is genuinely arresting, and even in a small tank this fish reads as a real centerpiece against live rock and coral. Personality-wise, Bicolor Pseudochromis are confident and can lean semi-aggressive, particularly in tight quarters or toward similarly shaped fish and smaller, shy species. They're generally considered reef safe with corals, but they may opportunistically pick at very small ornamental crustaceans like tiny shrimp if hiding spots and feeding aren't dialed in. In a well-aquascaped tank with plenty of structure, they tend to settle into a territory and coexist well with robust tankmates such as clownfish, wrasses, and other similarly assertive species. Adding them as one of the last fish in the stocking plan, and avoiding very timid tankmates, goes a long way toward keeping aggression manageable.
Aquarium Requirements Bicolor Pseudochromis do well in smaller saltwater aquariums as long as the aquascape gives them what they need. That means ample rockwork, caves, and crevices where they can claim a territory and retreat when startled. A mature reef or FOWLR setup with stable water quality and strong biological filtration suits this active carnivore well, as it appreciates frequent small feedings and consistent conditions. Arrange live rock to break sightlines, which helps reduce territorial disputes and encourages natural darting and hovering behavior throughout the day. A secure lid is always recommended with dottybacks, since they're known to jump when startled or during squabbles with tankmates. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, enriched brine, and quality marine pellets or frozen foods to keep this fish well-conditioned, colorful, and less likely to direct its energy at tankmates.
