Compatibility and Behavior
The Scooter Blenny wears an intricately mottled pattern of tan, brown, and rust broken up with lighter spots and dashes and small splashes of blue around the head and eyes, on a leaner, more streamlined body than most dragonets. Big wing-like pectoral fins drive its distinctive low, scooting shuffle across the sand, and a spade-shaped head with eyes set high on top lets it watch for food and danger while it rests on the bottom. It's completely peaceful and reef safe, no threat to corals, clams, or inverts. Keep only one male per tank, since males get territorial with each other, though a male-female will co-exist fine and likely pair up. It gets along with peaceful community fish like clownfish, gobies, blennies, and small wrasses, but can struggle to get its share at mealtime if housed with pushy, fast feeders, which ties directly into the real challenge below.
Aquarium Requirements
Scooter Blennies do best in a mature tank, ideally established at least six to eight months, with abundant live rock arranged into caves and crevices that sustain a thriving, self-replenishing copepod and amphipod population. Plan on at least 30 gallons with a deep live sand bed that echoes the sandy lagoons it comes from and gives it room to forage. A refugium steadily producing pods is a major help, since natural grazing alone often won't sustain one long-term. Moderate lighting, efficient filtration, and a good protein skimmer keep conditions stable. Supplement its grazing with small amounts of enriched frozen mysis, brine, or cyclops several times a day, but understand a consistent live pod supply is what carries it.
