Unicorn Tang (Naso Unicornis)
Also Known As: Bluespine Unicornfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Unicorn Tang (Naso unicornis) is a powerful open-water grazer that grows into a genuine showpiece in very large systems. Juveniles and sub-adults show a streamlined gray-green to olive body with soft blue edging on the fins and pale lips, while mature adults develop the species' signature bony "horn" on the forehead along with bright blue spines at the base of the tail. Note that you may not see a visible"unicorn horn" until they are XL-Show size. As they grow, that elongated profile and gradual color shift give them a refined, almost pelagic look that stands out beautifully against rock and open water. There's a real reward in raising one of these from a small fish and watching the horn slowly emerge as it matures. Temperament-wise, Unicorn Tangs tend to be peaceful to semi-aggressive and are often more easygoing than many other Tang species when given room. They're typically considered reef safe, spending most of the day browsing film and macroalgae off rock and hard surfaces rather than corals or ornamental inverts, though an underfed or stressed individual may occasionally posture or nip. In most cases they coexist well with other large, non-bullying tankmates like differently shaped tangs, angels, wrasses, Anthias, and robust community fish, as long as the system is spacious and aquascaped to avoid territorial bottlenecks.
Aquarium Requirements
These are ideally big-tank fish, and they grow fast, so even smaller specimens are best started in large, long systems that can grow with them. For fish in the Sm to Md range, a setup in the 100-gallon-plus category with a long footprint is strongly recommended, with substantially larger volumes preferred for the Lg, XL, and Show sizes. Aquascape with broad, open swimming lanes and sturdy mature live rock that offers gentle slopes, ledges, and a few deep caves for security, while keeping plenty of open water for constant cruising. Strong, turbulent flow, high oxygenation, and heavy-duty filtration are essential, since these active herbivores produce significant waste and appreciate very clean, stable water. A secure lid or mesh cover helps prevent injuries from sudden dashes, and frequent feedings of nori, macroalgae, and varied herbivore foods throughout the day will support growth, coloration, and calm behavior.
