Wheeler's Shrimp Goby (Amblyeleotris Wheeleri)
Also Known As: Wheeler's Watchman Goby, Gorgeous Prawn Goby
Compatibility and Behavior
The common name "Gorgeous Prawn Goby" isn't just marketing, it's a fair description of the Wheeler's Shrimp Goby (Amblyeleotris wheeleri). A pale white to cream body is crossed by bold, broad red-orange bands that sets it apart from related species, and the whole fish is scattered with tiny red dots that set it apart with a unique colorway. Beyond the looks, the appeal is the partnership, since like the other shrimp gobies it forms one of the hobby's most captivating symbioses with an Alpheid pistol shrimp (often a Tiger or Randall's), where the nearly blind shrimp digs and maintains a shared burrow while the goby stands guard and signals danger with subtle tail flicks. A pistol shrimp isn't required, but the pairing is highly instinctive and often happens the moment the goby spots a compatible shrimp nearby. It's fully reef safe and won't harm corals or inverts. It can be aggressive toward other similar shrimp gobies over territory, though its own kind can coexist if introduced to the tank at the same time.
Aquarium Requirements
Substrate and a lid come first, as with all the shrimp gobies. Give it a tank of at least 20 gallons with a sand bed of 2 to 4 inches, ideally mixed with fine rubble, crushed coral, or shell fragments to support a stable burrow, especially when paired with a pistol shrimp.Because this goby spends most of its time hovering near its burrow, scattering small rubble and rock nearby helps it feel confident enough to stay out in view. A tight-fitting, gap-free lid is essential, as this is a well-documented jumper, particularly when newly introduced or startled. Gentle to moderate flow works best, directed away from the burrow entrance, since strong turbulence on the sand makes it hard for the goby to perch. Feed mysis, enriched brine, and finely chopped seafood several times a day.
