Black Boxfish EXPERT (Ostracion Meleagris)
Also Known As: Black Box Pufferfish
Compatibility and Behavior The Black Boxfish is one of those fish that's impossible to mistake for anything else. The compact, box-shaped body is finished in a smooth jet-black, accented with pale edging on the small, rounded fins, and the whole package hovers through the water with an almost toy-like swimming style. A small, expressive mouth gives it real personality up close, and against a brightly aquascaped reef the silhouette stands out in a way few other fish manage. Behavior-wise, this is a slow-moving and generally peaceful species that does well with calm, larger tankmates, but like other boxfish and cowfish relatives it may nip at fleshy invertebrates, so it should be approached with caution in a fully stocked reef. Stress is the bigger issue with boxfish in general. Aggressive or fast-moving tankmates can rattle them, and they don't compete well at feeding time against pushy species. Settled into a quiet, stable community, a Black Boxfish often becomes quite personable, cruising the rockwork and front glass in search of food and investigating its keeper with curious, deliberate movements.
Aquarium Requirements A spacious, well-established marine aquarium is the right home, with plenty of open water for slow, deliberate swimming and rockwork to explore. A tank with good front-to-back footprint helps a lot, since boxfish are not nimble swimmers and need room to maneuver comfortably. Keep flow gentle to moderate so they aren't getting pushed around the tank. Strong biological filtration is also important, both to handle their meaty diet and because they tend to be sensitive to water quality slipping. Pair them with peaceful tankmates, take acclimation slowly, and keep conditions as stable as possible. Offer a varied diet of small meaty foods, enriched marine preparations, and quality pellets formulated for omnivorous marine fish to keep them in good condition.
One important note on boxfish toxicity: like all Ostraciidae, the Black Boxfish can release a potent toxin (ostracitoxin) when severely stressed or dying. In a closed aquarium, this can wipe out the entire tank, so it's worth having activated carbon and emergency water change supplies ready.
