Bluejaw Trigger (Male) (Xanthichthys Auromarginatus)
Also Known As: Blue Throat Triggerfish, Gilded Triggerfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Male Bluejaw Triggerfish (Xanthichthys auromarginatus) is one of, if not the most reef-friendly triggers you can keep. Males feature a green to gray to lavender-brown body is accented by a visible blue patch beneath the jaw, plus bright yellow margins on the dorsal, anal, and shallowly notched tail fins, all of which set them apart from females. Here’s what makes this trigger special: in the wild it feeds primarily on drifting zooplankton rather than crunching inverts, which makes it far less disruptive than most of its family. It’s generally coral safe, though it still lands at reef safe with caution, since ornamental shrimp and other small inverts may become prey. Similarly sized tangs, angelfish, and moderately assertive wrasses make suitable companions, while aggressive triggers may intimidate it, especially during introduction. A new arrival may hide at first before settling in as a confident, enthusiastic feeder. Keep one male per tank.
Aquarium Requirements
A mature tank of 100 gallons or larger is recommended, providing generous swimming room alongside live rock arranged into caves and deep crevices. Those retreats matter, since Bluejaws may wedge themselves into the rockwork to rest or when startled. Secure the aquascape and preserve broad swimming lanes rather than filling the display with dense rock, and provide good circulation, oxygenation, and efficient filtration to handle regular meaty feedings. Offer appropriately sized food into the water column, and give a shy new arrival the chance to eat without competition from established tankmates.
Specifications
