C/B Fridmani Pseudochromis (Pseudochromis Fridmani)
Also Known As: Orchid Dottyback, Fridmani Pseudochromis
Compatibility and Behavior If you've ever wished a dottyback came with a calmer disposition, the Fridmani is the one most reefers reach for. It's a longtime favorite, and the captive-bred version brings together everything people love about the species: rich orchid-purple coloration over a slim, torpedo-shaped body, a slightly darker head, and a delicate forked tail that practically glows under reef lighting. Look closely and you'll often catch thin, darker lines running from the snout through the eye, which gives the face a watchful, inquisitive expression as it hovers near the rockwork. What sets this one apart from its cousins is temperament. The Fridmani tends to be noticeably more community-friendly than most pseudochromis, making it a solid pick for peaceful to moderately active reef tanks. It may stake out a small territory and can get a little feisty toward similar-shaped fish or other dottybacks, but in a well-aquascaped tank it generally coexists nicely with clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and other small to medium community fish. Captive-bred individuals usually settle in fast, take prepared foods without fuss, and tend to behave more predictably than wild-caught specimens. They're considered reef safe and typically ignore ornamental invertebrates, which makes them a great fit for mixed coral systems and nano reefs alike.
Aquarium Requirements A smaller reef or FOWLR setup with plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices is all this fish really asks for. It wants a spot to claim and somewhere to duck into when startled. A mature, stable system with good biological filtration suits these active micro-predators well, and they do best with frequent small feedings and consistent water quality. Aquascaping that breaks up sight lines with caves, arches, and branching rock goes a long way toward keeping territorial behavior in check and giving everyone room to move without constant standoffs. They aren't the worst jumpers in the hobby, but a tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is still worth having, since they can leap if spooked or chased near the surface.
