C/B Springeri Pseudochromis (Pseudochromis Springeri)
Also Known As: Springeri Dottyback
Compatibility and Behavior The Springeri Pseudochromis is proof that a dottyback doesn't need bright colors to turn heads. Its slim, torpedo-shaped body runs a deep charcoal that edges into inky black, traced with electric blue along the dorsal fin, the margins of the tail, and occasionally the face. Set against live rock and coral, that dark-and-blue contrast is hard to look away from. Temperament tends to land in a nice middle ground. Captive-bred Springeri are confident enough to stay out and visible, yet not so brash that they bulldoze the tank, and you'll often see them gliding through the rockwork, holding station at a cave entrance, then shooting out to grab whatever food floats past. One of the perks of aquacultured stock is that their aggression usually reads as more measured and predictable than what you'd get from a wild fish. They'll still defend a patch of territory, and similar-shaped tankmates like other pseudochromis or small basslets are the most likely to provoke a chase in tight quarters. With adequate space and hiding spots, though, they generally settle in well beside clownfish, wrasses, damsels, and other fish that can hold their own. They're reef safe with corals and tend to ignore ornamental invertebrates, the one asterisk being that very small shrimp might be at risk in a smaller setup. Thoughtful stocking usually rewards you with a bold, ever-present resident that adds both color and character to nano and mid-sized reefs.
Aquarium Requirements You don't need a big tank here. A smaller reef or FOWLR system works fine as long as it offers ample live rock, caves, and crevices for the fish to claim and duck into when startled. A mature, stable setup with strong biological filtration is the foundation, and these active micro-predators stay healthiest on frequent small meaty feedings paired with consistent water quality. When you lay out the rockwork, aim for plenty of hiding spots and broken sight lines. It tempers territorial behavior and gives more timid tankmates an exit if they end up being chased. And don't skip the lid. Like other dottybacks, Springeri are willing jumpers, so a tight-fitting cover or mesh top is essential for catching the leap that follows a scare or a surface skirmish.
