Camel Cowfish (Tetrosomus Gibbosus)
Also Known As: Camel Boxfish, Humpback Cowfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Camel Cowfish is one of the more unusual silhouettes in the marine hobby. The body is angular and box-shaped with a pronounced camel-like humpback profile, finished with short forward-pointing horns above the eyes. Coloration typically runs from warm tan to golden brown, scattered with spots and fine irregular markings. Additionally, the small rounded fins paired with a rigid body produce the slow, hovering swimming style that boxfish and cowfish are known for. This is a generally peaceful, slow-moving species that often does well with calm, non-aggressive tankmates that won't nip at its fins or beat it to the food. Like other boxfish and cowfish, it falls into the reef safe with caution category. Some individuals will pick at fleshy invertebrates or soft corals, and stress or harassment can make that behavior more likely. Settled into a quiet, stable community, a Camel Cowfish often becomes quite personable, methodically exploring the rockwork and approaching the front glass with the kind of deliberate, curious movements that make this species such fun to keep.
Aquarium Requirements
A mature aquarium is needed for this species, with plenty of open swimming space along with rockwork, caves, and overhangs to investigate at a relaxed pace. A tank with a generous footprint paired with gentle to moderate flow lets the fish maneuver comfortably without getting buffeted by strong currents. Peaceful tankmates, stable water quality, and patient acclimation all play a real role in long-term success, since boxfish and cowfish are sensitive to stress and sudden changes in their environment. Newer, less stable tanks are not recommended for these species. Aquascape with shaded areas and sheltered zones for retreat, while keeping clear runways in front of the rockwork where the fish can cruise and forage. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped meaty marine foods, marine algae, and quality omnivore pellets to keep body condition strong and encourage the natural grazing behavior these fish show over rock and sand.
One important note on cowfish toxicity: like all Ostraciidae, the Camel Cowfish can release a potent toxin (ostracitoxin) when severely stressed or dying. In a closed aquarium, this can wipe out the entire tank, so it's worth having activated carbon and emergency water change supplies ready.
