Midnight Angel (Centropyge Nox)
Also Known As: Midnight Dwarf Angel, Midnight Pygmy Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Midnight Angel makes its statement through simplicity. The entire body, fins, and face are a uniform inky black, and that deep, clean coloration provides striking contrast against bright corals and light-colored rockwork. The compact oval body and smooth, rounded dorsal and anal fins give it a sleek, continuous silhouette that looks unlike most other dwarf angels in the hobby. Like most dwarf angels, emperament tends toward semi-aggressive, particularly as the fish matures. It generally coexists well with a range of community fish including tangs, wrasses, and clownfish, but very timid or slow-moving tankmates can end up on the receiving end of some harassment in smaller systems. One dwarf angel per tank is the standard recommendation, as these fish can be genuinely feisty toward others of the same genus. Reef safety follows the typical Centropyge pattern. Many individuals live peacefully alongside corals without issue, while others will nip at fleshy LPS, zoanthids, clam mantles, and certain soft corals, especially when underfed or stressed. Some risk will almost always remain, so it's worth going in with realistic expectations.
Aquarium Requirements
The Midnight Angel does best in a well-established reef or FOWLR system with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. A 55-gallon tank works for a single adult, though more space helps reduce territorial behavior and gives the fish room to settle in. Caves, arches, and crevices in the rockwork are genuinely important here. This species tends to be more confident and shows better coloration when it has secure retreats readily available. A tight-fitting lid or mesh top is worth taking seriously. Dwarf angels can jump when startled or chased, and it happens faster than you'd expect. Feed a varied diet that includes sponge-based angelfish preparations, spirulina, nori, mysis, finely chopped seafood, and quality pellets. Keeping them well-fed on a diverse diet is one of the more reliable ways to reduce grazing on corals.
