Ornate Leopard Wrasse EXPER (Macropharyngodon Ornatus)
Also Known As: False Leopard Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior
The Ornate Leopard Wrasse is a beautifully patterned sand-sleeping wrasse that spends its day actively hunting for tiny invertebrates across the rockwork and substrate. Like most Leopard Wrasses, this species requires a deep sandbed for natural burrowing. It is generally peaceful toward other community fish and is reef safe. This species can be shy at first and might spend extended periods buried in the sand during acclimation, gradually becoming bolder as it settles. Like the Black Leopard Wrasse, the Ornate Leopard is one of the smaller Leopard Wrasse species.
Like all Leopard Wrasses, this is a more difficult species that not only requires a deep sandbed for natural burrowing, but is in general a more sensitive species. Ideally, it’s best to introduce and establish any Leopard Wrasses first before introducing more boisterous and larger fish to give the best chances of success. That way your Leopard Wrasse can establish itself and get used to eating prepared foods before more competitive fish are brought into the picture. You may keep multiple Leopard Wrasses in the same display tank, but introducing them simultaneously is ideal to reduce chances of aggression.
Live Arrival Guarantee: Due to their environmental sensitivity and need for a deep sand bed, we're only able to guarantee Leopard Wrasses for live arrival. Please make sure your setup is ready before ordering.
Aquarium Requirements
Provide a well-established saltwater aquarium of at least 50 gallons with abundant live rock for foraging and a soft sandy substrate deep enough for the wrasse to bury itself at night or when stressed. A sandbed of fine to moderately fine sand is crucial for its long-term health, as Ornate Leopard Wrasses rely on it for security and rest. A tight-fitting lid or mesh top is strongly recommended, as this species can jump if startled or chased. Stable, mature systems with plenty of natural microfauna and frequent small feedings support successful acclimation and long-term success with this more delicate wrasse.
