Pseudo Chromis Purple (Pseudochromis Porphyreus)
Also Known As: Purple Dottyback, Magenta Dottyback
Compatibility and Behavior The Purple Pseudochromis (Pseudochromis porphyreus) is a small, high-impact nano fish that brings a saturated wash of color to smaller marine aquariums. The slender, torpedo-shaped body is an even, vivid magenta-purple from snout to tail, finished with a slightly translucent caudal fin and bright, alert eyes that really stand out against live rock and coral. Most of the day, this fish hugs the rockwork, weaving in and out of caves and crevices and hovering near its chosen territory while keeping an eye out for passing food. Personality-wise, Purple Pseudochromis are confident and can lean semi-aggressive, particularly in tight quarters or toward similarly shaped fish like other dottybacks, basslets, or very small, timid tankmates. They're generally considered reef safe with corals but may opportunistically pick off tiny ornamental crustaceans (small shrimp included) if hiding spots are limited or feeding is inconsistent. They tend to do best alongside robust community fish that can hold their own. In a well-scaped tank with plenty of hiding spots and broken sightlines, they usually settle into one part of the aquascape and coexist well with clownfish, wrasses, and similarly assertive species. Adding them toward the end of the stocking order, and avoiding other pseudochromis species in the same tank, goes a long way toward keeping territorial behavior in check.
Aquarium Requirements Purple Pseudochromis do very well in smaller reef or FOWLR systems as long as the aquascape provides what they need: ample rockwork with caves, overhangs, and crevices to claim as territory. They thrive in mature tanks with stable water quality and strong biological filtration, and they appreciate frequent small feedings of meaty foods throughout the day. Arrange the rockwork to create multiple hiding spots and visual barriers, so timid tankmates have escape routes and aggression is naturally diffused. A secure, tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended, since this species can jump when startled or during territorial chases. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets or frozen foods to keep this fish well-conditioned, colorful, and less inclined to take its energy out on tankmates.
Specifications
Approximate Size: 1-1.75"
Diet: Carnivore (frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine, finely chopped seafood, quality marine pellets or frozen foods)
Origin: Western Pacific / Indo-Pacific region (often available as captive-bred)
Care Level: Easy
Reef Safe: Yes, with caution (generally safe with corals; may prey on very small crustaceans)
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial toward similar-shaped or smaller fish, especially in small tanks
Minimum Tank Size: Around 20–30 gallons, with plenty of live rock and hiding places
Special Considerations: Best added toward the end of the stocking order; avoid housing alongside other pseudochromis species; rockwork with broken sightlines helps manage territorial behavior; secure lid recommended due to jumping risk
