Pygmy Cherub Angel (Centropyge Argi)
Also Known As: Cherub Angelfish, Cherubfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Pygmy Cherub Angel packs a lot of color into a very small package. It’s truly one of the cutest Angelfish species in the trade. The body is a deep sapphire blue, the face and chest are bright orange-yellow, and a thin neon blue ring circles the eye in a way that really catches the light in a reef setting. Adults rarely exceed 2 inches, making this one of the smallest marine angels available, but the personality is anything but small. This species is bold and territorial, quick to defend a favorite patch of rockwork against similarly shaped fish and other dwarf angels. It generally coexists well with small to medium community fish like tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and gobies, but timid tankmates and other Centropyge can have a rough time sharing space with one in a smaller system. One dwarf angel per tank is the safer approach unless the setup is large enough to absorb that territorial energy.
Reef safety is best treated as "with caution." Many individuals spend their days grazing film algae and microfauna on live rock without bothering corals, but some will nip at LPS, soft corals, zoanthids, or clam mantles, particularly when underfed or confined. Frequent varied feeding and a mature reef with plenty of natural grazing surfaces help reduce that risk, though some uncertainty always comes with keeping dwarf angels in coral-heavy systems.
Aquarium Requirements
The Pygmy Cherub Angel does best in a mature system with abundant live rock arranged into arches, caves, and crevices for both grazing and retreating. A 30 to 40-gallon tank is a realistic minimum for long-term success, and the extra volume helps with stability and keeps territorial behavior more manageable, especially alongside other semi-assertive species. Rockwork should create multiple distinct territories and shaded pockets so this fish can claim its own space and settle in. A tight-fitting lid or mesh top is worth taking seriously. Cherub Angels can and do jump when startled or chased. Feed a varied diet that includes sponge-based angelfish formulas, spirulina, nori, mysis, enriched brine, and small pellets or flakes. Keeping them consistently well-fed is one of the more reliable ways to discourage coral sampling over the long term.
