Red Coris Wrasse (Coris Gaimard)
Also Known As: Clown Wrasse, Yellowtail Coris Wrasse
Compatibility, Behavior, and Environment
The Red Coris Wrasse (Coris gaimard) undergoes a dramatic transformation from its vividly patterned juvenile phase to the equally stunning adult coloration. Juveniles are peaceful and best suited for tanks with other non-aggressive fish, but adults may become semi-aggressive. Both are known for their active burrowing and foraging habits. This species is not considered reef safe, as it may eat ornamental shrimp, snails, and other invertebrates and will rearrange rocks and substrate in its search for food. It rarely damages coral polyps directly but may inadvertently topple or damage coral colonies during its energetic hunting. For best results, house only a single Red Coris Wrasse per tank, and avoid pairing with delicate invertebrates or small, passive fish. These will thrive in a fish only tank as long as you have a nice deep sandbed for it.
A note on our guarantee: Because a deep sand bed is so critical to this species' wellbeing and survival, we're only able to guarantee Coris Wrasses for live arrival. Please make sure your setup is ready before ordering.
Aquarium Requirements
A minimum tank size of 50 gallons for juveniles, and 100–125 gallons for adults is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and burrowing. The aquarium should feature a deep, fine sand bed (3-5 inches for adults) for sleeping and hiding, along with sturdy rockwork and caves. The tank should have a secure lid to prevent jumping. Feed a varied, meaty diet, and offer multiple feedings daily to support its high energy needs.
