Royal Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus Angulatus)
Also Known As: Royal Flasher Fairy Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior The Royal Flasher Wrasse is a small but genuinely showstopping fish, especially when a male gets going. Males display a vivid combination of red to orange body tones with contrasting blue and yellow highlights on the fins, plus elongated dorsal and anal fin rays that flare dramatically during courtship and display — the "flash" that gives this group their name. It's reef safe with corals and clams and generally a peaceful community fish, though very aggressive tankmates tend to stress it out or push it off food. One thing many hobbyists enjoy: keeping Royal Flashers alongside other flasher or fairy wrasses tends to trigger more frequent display behavior, turning what's already a good-looking fish into an active, flaring centerpiece. Note that this is one of the smaller wrasse species, and it may change color and display white stripes when stressed.
Aquarium Requirements A 55-gallon or larger established reef with open mid-water swimming space and reef-style rockwork offering caves, ledges, and shaded retreats is the right environment for this species. It doesn't bury in sand, so substrate isn't a concern — aquascape complexity and available hiding spots matter far more. Moderate, varied flow and stable water conditions suit it well. A secure, tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable; flasher wrasses are well-known jumpers, particularly during social interactions or sudden disturbances. Frequent small feedings of mysis, enriched brine shrimp, copepod-based preparations, and finely chopped meaty foods keep it active, well-conditioned, and displaying at its best.
