Splendid Dottyback (Pseudochromis Splendens)
Also Known As: Splendid Pseudochromis, Splendens Dottyback
Compatibility and Behavior The Splendid Dottyback (Pseudochromis splendens) lives up to its name and then some. This nano predator brings a serious dose of color and personality to smaller reef aquariums. Featuring absolutely "Splendid" patterning throughout the body and a wide range of colors from a silver, yellow, and several shades of blue, and finished off with a streamlined torpedo shape and a narrow, pointed snout, this is a truly unique and beautiful species. Under good reef lighting, the rich coloration contrasts beautifully against live rock and coral, and this fish ends up reading like a centerpiece despite its compact size. However, be warned: the Splendid Dottyback can be fairly aggressive and territorial toward similarly shaped fish, other pseudochromis, and very small or timid tankmates, especially in tight quarters. It's generally considered reef safe with corals, but may opportunistically pick off tiny ornamental crustaceans (very small shrimp included) if underfed or confined. In a well-aquascaped tank with plenty of hiding spots and robust companions such as clownfish, wrasses, and other assertive community fish, it usually settles into a defined territory and becomes an active, inquisitive resident.
Aquarium Requirements The Splendid Dottyback thrives in reef or FOWLR setups with ample live rock, caves, and crevices where it can claim a territory and retreat when startled. A mature aquarium with stable water quality and strong biological filtration is the ideal environment, since this active carnivore benefits from frequent small feedings and consistent conditions. Arrange the rockwork to create multiple hiding spots and broken sightlines, which helps diffuse aggression and gives more timid tankmates safe routes to avoid direct confrontations. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is recommended, as dottybacks are known to jump when startled or during territorial chases near the surface. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets or frozen foods to keep this fish well-conditioned, colorful, and less inclined to direct its energy at tankmates.
