Sunset Wrasse (Thalassoma Lutescens)
Also Known As: Banana Wrasse, Yellow Moon Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior The Sunset Wrasse arrives with intense yellow and blue-green coloration and the kind of bold, fast-moving energy that commands attention in a large display tank. That personality is part of its appeal — but it comes with some important caveats. As this species matures, it can become quite assertive, and smaller or timid tankmates tend to have a rough time sharing space with it. It generally does best alongside other confident, robust fish — larger tangs, angels, triggers, and similarly sized "personality" fish that can hold their own. This isn't a reef-safe species: ornamental crustaceans, snails, and worms are all likely targets, and its active hunting style can disturb loose coral frags and small invertebrates. A fish-only or FOWLR setup suits it much better than a mixed reef.
Aquarium Requirements This is a big, active fish that needs space to match. Powerful filtration and strong oxygenation are important given its metabolism and constant movement, and the tank layout should prioritize open swimming lanes across the front and length of the display. Sturdy caves and ledges in the rockwork give it somewhere to retreat at night, but don't let the hardscape eat up too much open water — this fish cruises, and it needs room to do it comfortably. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is a serious consideration; it can jump when startled or during a quick chase. Feed at least once or twice daily with a varied, meaty diet: mysis, krill, chopped marine meats, and high-quality pellets will support its growth and keep its coloration looking sharp.
