Venustus Angelfish EXPERT (Paracentropyge Venusta)
Also Known As: Purple Masked Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Venustus Angel is one of the most rare and striking deep-water dwarf angels you'll come across. The lower body and face are a vivid golden yellow, contrasted by rich bluish-purple patches forming a mask over the eyes and a broad blue saddle across the back. The dorsal half of the body and caudal fin run blue to purple, while the anal and pelvic fins stay bright yellow with fine blue edging. It's a bold, high-contrast color scheme that reads beautifully even in the dimmer, cave-heavy aquascapes this fish prefers.
Personality-wise, this species is naturally shy and cryptic, often spending long stretches hovering upside-down under ledges or tucked into caves. Some individuals take weeks before they're comfortable enough to venture consistently into open water. Once acclimated and eating well they can become genuinely inquisitive, but they tend to stay on the less assertive side compared to most Centropyge dwarf angels. Aggressive or boisterous tankmates are a real problem for this fish, and a calm, low-stress environment is less a preference than a requirement. Reef safety is generally "with caution." Most individuals graze rock surfaces and cave walls rather than targeting corals directly, but nipping at LPS, clam mantles, and occasionally SPS has been reported.
Aquarium Requirements
The Venustus Angel needs a very mature, stable system built around complex rockwork with numerous caves, overhangs, and shaded recesses that closely mimic its natural deep-reef habitat. A 70 to 90-gallon tank is the practical minimum, with vertical rock structures and darker cave zones taking priority over open, brightly lit aquascapes. Many keepers ease these fish into brighter conditions gradually rather than dropping them straight into a high-intensity reef environment. Strong biological filtration, excellent oxygenation, and pristine water quality are genuinely important here. This species reacts poorly to elevated nutrients and parameter swings, and it should only be added to a thoroughly dialed-in, well-established system. Feed small and often, presenting food near caves and rock faces where the fish feels secure. Sponge-based angelfish formulas should anchor the diet, with mysis, enriched brine, finely chopped seafood, and quality pellets mixed in regularly.
