Compatibility and Behavior
The Red Scooter (Synchiropus stellatus) is a spectacularly colored cousin to the Scooter Blenny, perfect for populating the lower water column. Where it parts ways with the standard Scooter is the color: a marbling mosaic of red and white that adds a huge splash of color to the tank. Males run brighter and carry an elongated first dorsal spine they flick up in display, while females are subtler and smaller-finned. It's completely reef safe, no threat to corals, clams, or inverts. Keep only one male per tank unless the system is very large, since rival males will fight, though a single male coexists peacefully with two or three females given the room. It pairs well with small gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, and gentle wrasses, but can struggle to get its share around fast, aggressive feeders, which leads straight into the real challenge below.

Aquarium Requirements
As with every dragonet, the Red Scooter wants a fully mature tank, ideally established six to eight months or longer, with abundant live rock arranged into caves and crevices that sustain a self-replenishing copepod and amphipod population. At least 30 gallons is the minimum, but 50 or more is strongly preferred, since more rock and substrate means a larger, more resilient pod supply. A deep sand bed of 2 to 3 inches paired with a macroalgae refugium is one of the best setups you can give it, the refugium acting as a protected pod nursery that continuously restocks the display. Gentle to moderate, indirect flow suits its slow, methodical hunting style, since strong turbulence disrupts it. Supplement its grazing with small amounts of enriched frozen foods like baby brine where accepted, but understand a steady live pod population is what carries it long-term.
