The Twin Spot Goby (Signigobius biocellatus) comes with a built-in magic trick. The pair of large, dark eyespots ringed in yellow on its dorsal fins isn't just decoration, it's a threat display: flared open when the fish is startled, the two spots mimic the eyes of a much bigger predator, buying the goby a moment to retreat. The rest of the fish is subtle by comparison, a tan to pale gray body with orange-brown mottling and a vertical orange stripe through the eyes, though the pelvic and anal fins break the pattern entirely with black speckled in bright blue. It's reef safe and won't bother corals or inverts directly. It can turn fairly territorial toward other Twin Spots or similar sand-sifters when space is tight, so avoid housing multiple sifting gobies in smaller tanks.

Aquarium Requirements
Success with this goby comes down to food and substrate. Like Mandarin Gobies, it's a grazer that sifts sand for copepods, amphipods, and microfauna, so it needs a fully mature tank of at least 30 gallons, ideally with an attached refugium continuously restocking that live food supply. Give it a fine, sugar-sized sand bed of 2 to 3 inches to sift through and build burrows in near rockwork or rubble, along with stable live rock offering cracks, crevices, and caves to hide in, since it's shy early on. A tight-fitting, gap-free lid is a wise precaution, as gobies are known to jump when stressed or establishing territory. The make-or-break detail is feeding: this is a notoriously slow, picky eater, so target-feed small amounts of meaty foods like enriched brine, mysis, and cyclops directly onto the sand several times a day to give it a real shot at long-term success.
