Female Bellus Angel (Genicanthus Bellus)
Compatibility and Behavior The female Bellus Angel (Genicanthus bellus) is one of those rare finds in the angelfish world — a species that's genuinely considered reef safe with corals and clams. It's one of the very few angelfish that can be kept with confidence in SPS and mixed reef systems, and it's a big part of why this species is so sought after by reef hobbyists who've always wanted an angel in their display. Their dramatic blue, silver, orange, and black color profile is unique among any species in the hobby. Moreover, Bellus Angels feature sexual dimorphism: the fascinating ability to change sex from female to male. You may even catch a transitioning specimen, where you will still be able to see the patterns and colors of a female fading out on a male Bellus' body.
Bellus Angels are generally peaceful toward other fish, though they may show mild dominance toward smaller planktivores in tighter quarters — calm, similarly sized tankmates tend to work best. They are calm, graceful swimmers that have incredible presence in either reef or fish-only tanks.
Aquarium Requirements Bellus Angels are open-water swimmers that need room to move — a 90-gallon minimum with plenty of horizontal swimming space and strong yet variable flow suits them well. They're not heavy rock pickers, spending most of their time cruising the mid-water column, but an aquascape with ledges and overhangs gives them somewhere to retreat when startled. A secure, tight-fitting lid is important; this is an active, pelagic species and it can jump when frightened. Feed multiple times daily with a varied diet of mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality pellets to support their constant activity and long-term health.
