Multibar Angelfish EXPERT (Paracentropyge Multifasciata)
Also Known As: Many Banded Dwarf Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Multibar Angel is one of the more sought-after dwarf angels in the hobby, and the coloration explains why. Crisp, narrow black vertical bars run across a bright white body, with a glowing yellow to orange belly and yellow accents on the face and fins. The spiky dorsal fin and compact body give it a delicate, almost butterfly-like profile, and under good lighting that high-contrast striping looks almost hand-painted as it moves through the rockwork. Personality-wise, this species runs on the shy and cryptic side, particularly when first introduced. It tends to stay close to caves, overhangs, and shaded areas, and while many individuals become more inquisitive and active once settled and feeding well, they generally never quite reach the boldness of a typical Centropyge. Boisterous or aggressive tankmates can keep this fish perpetually stressed and hidden, so peaceful companions matter more here than with most dwarf angels. It's best kept as the only dwarf angel in the system.
Reef safety is generally "with caution;" most individuals focus on grazing film algae, sponges, and microfauna, but some will pick at fleshy LPS, clam mantles, and occasionally SPS when hungry or crowded.
Aquarium Requirements
This species comes from deep reef environments, and the aquarium setup should reflect that. A mature, stable tank of at least 70 to 75 gallons with abundant, intricate live rock and plenty of shaded caves and overhangs is the baseline. Low to moderate lighting, or at minimum dim cave-like refuges within the aquascape, helps this deep-water fish feel secure and encourages it to venture out and feed with more confidence. Stable parameters and gentle but well-oxygenated flow matter considerably here. This is a species that reacts poorly to water quality swings or elevated nutrients, and it should only be added to a thoroughly established, well-maintained system. Feed small and often, with a varied diet built around sponge-based angelfish foods (sponge is a crucial part of their diet), quality marine pellets, mysis, finely chopped seafood, and enriched brine. Multibar Angels are challenging feeders, and smearing foods into rockwork or using a feeding station often helps bridge the gap as they adjust to their new home.
