Mappa Puffer (Arothron Mappa)
Also Known As: Scribbled Arothron, Map Puffer
Compatibility and Behavior
The best part of keeping a Mappa Puffer (Arothron mappa) is that no two look alike. The body is covered in intricate maze-like lines, dots, and swirls that read like a topographic map, and the variation from fish to fish is genuinely striking, running from lighter tan and cream bases with fine dark scribbles to deeper browns or gray-green bodies with bold, high-contrast markings. Add the thick torpedo build, big expressive eyes, and blunt dog-like snout, and you get one of the more striking and characterful faces in the hobby. Most learn to recognize their keeper fast, begging at the glass and interacting in a way that makes them feel more like a wet pet than a display fish. Behaviorally it is a curious, methodical cruiser that works the rockwork and substrate for morsels and inspects anything new you add. As with the rest of the genus, it is not reef safe: it will eat or nip snails, crabs, shrimp, clams, and many other inverts, and may chew soft corals, so it belongs in a fish-only or FOWLR setup. It tends to coexist well with other robust, non-nippy fish, though very small, delicate, or shy tankmates can be at risk of harassment or an accidental bite during energetic feedings. And like all puffers, it can inflate when severely stressed, so keep handling and transfers calm and deliberate to avoid forcing it to puff, especially in air.
Aquarium Requirements
For juveniles and sub-adults in the 2 to 4 inch range, a tank around 100 gallons is a realistic starting point, with significantly larger volumes strongly recommended as it grows. Aquascape with solid rock, arches, and caves for interest and secure resting spots, and avoid sharp decor or unstable stacks that could injure it if it bumps or inflates. Filtration carries extra weight with this species, since Mappa Puffers are messy, heavy eaters with a substantial bioload, so plan on high-capacity mechanical and biological filtration, strong surface agitation, and consistent water changes. Feeding doubles as dental care: offer a varied meaty diet of shrimp, squid, clam, and krill, and work in hard-shelled items like crab pieces or clam on the half shell to keep those continuously growing beak-like teeth worn down.
Specifications
Approximate Size: 2–4"
Diet: Carnivore; shrimp, squid, clam, krill, and hard-shelled foods like crab or clam on the half shell to help wear down the beak-like teeth
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Care Level: Intermediate to expert
Reef Safe: No
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Minimum Tank Size: 100 gallons for juveniles, with a larger system required as it grows
Special Considerations: Not reef safe and will prey on inverts and may damage corals; hard-shelled foods help keep its beak-like teeth worn down; handle and net with care, and avoid forcing it to inflate in air, which can be dangerous for the fish
