Yellow Belly Dogface Puffer (Arothron Nigropunctatus)
Also Known As: Yellow Belly Blackspotted Puffer
Compatibility and Behavior
Think of the Yellow Belly Dogface (Arothron nigropunctatus) as the standard Dogface Puffer in its Sunday best. Same rounded body, same big expressive eyes, same lovable dog-like face, but with a golden-yellow wash spilling across the lower body and belly that plays off the gray-to-tan upper body and scattered black spots. The markings and amount of yellow vary greatly from fish to fish, so no two are quite alike, which is a big part of why collectors keep an eye out for a nicely colored one. Personality is where the Dogface line always earns its keep: this is an interactive, observant fish that cruises the glass, inspects new aquascape, and begs shamelessly at feeding time. As with the rest of its kin, it is not reef safe. It will readily eat snails, crabs, shrimp, and clams, and may chew soft corals or decorative inverts, so it belongs in a fish-only or FOWLR setup. It generally coexists well with other robust, non-nippy tankmates, though very small, delicate, or timid fish can be on the receiving end of harassment or an exploratory bite around mealtimes. And like all puffers, it can inflate when severely stressed, so handle it calmly and keep it from being lifted into air.
Aquarium Requirements
Care mirrors the standard Dogface closely, so if you have kept one of those you already know the drill. For specimens in the 2 to 4.5 inch range, a tank around 120 gallons is a realistic starting point, with larger volumes strongly preferred for the long haul. Give it solid rock, caves, and overhangs to rest in and feel secure, and skip sharp decor or unstable stacks that could injure it if it bumps or inflates. Filtration matters here more than with many fish, since puffers are messy, heavy eaters with a significant bioload, so plan on high-capacity mechanical and biological filtration, good surface agitation, and regular water changes. Feeding does double duty as dental care: offer a varied meaty diet of shrimp, squid, clam, and krill alongside quality marine pellets, and work in hard-shelled items like crab pieces or clam on the half shell to keep those continuously growing beak-like teeth worn down.
Specifications
Approximate Size: 2–4.5"
Diet: Carnivore; shrimp, squid, clam, krill, and hard-shelled foods like crab or clam on the half shell to help keep the teeth worn down
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Care Level: Intermediate
Reef Safe: No
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Minimum Tank Size: 120 gallons for smaller specimens, with a larger system required as it grows
Special Considerations: Not reef safe and will prey on inverts and may nip corals; needs hard-shelled foods to keep its beak-like teeth worn down; handle and net with care, and avoid forcing it to inflate in air, which can be dangerous for the fish
