Chocolate Tang (Acanthurus Pyroferus)
Also Known As: Mimic Tang, Mimic Chocolate Tang
Compatibility and Behavior
The Chocolate Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) earns its "mimic" nickname honestly. As a juvenile it masquerades as a bright yellow dwarf angel, which is why young ones often turn up in the trade labeled "Philippine Yellow" or "Mimic Lemon Peel" tang. Grow it out, though, and it sheds the disguise entirely, transitioning into warm tan-to-chocolate tones with a darker facial mask, subtle orange-brown patches near the gills, and soft blue edging along the fins that reads as smoky and refined under reef lighting. Note that can truly be a significant amount of color variation in this species. For hobbyists who enjoy watching a fish genuinely transform rather than just get bigger, this is one of the more rewarding tangs to raise from a juvenile. Behaviorally it runs the familiar surgeonfish line of peaceful to semi-aggressive, saving most of its attitude for other tangs and similarly shaped herbivores, particularly in smaller or crowded systems. It is reef safe in the day-to-day sense, grazing film and filamentous algae off the rocks rather than sampling corals or inverts, though a stressed or underfed individual may occasionally nip.
Aquarium Requirements
This is a medium-sized, active surgeonfish that wants horizontal room to cruise and a mature system with established live rock to graze. For medium specimens in the 2.5 to 3.5 inch range, a tank at least 100 to 120 gallons with a long footprint is a sensible baseline, with noticeably larger volumes preferred as it grows into the Lg and XL sizes. Aquascape with open lanes for swimming alongside arches and ledges for shelter, on porous rock that encourages the algae and biofilm it lives to pick at. The rest is standard tang care: strong, well-oxygenated flow, robust filtration, and stable water quality. Keep nori, marine algae, and varied herbivore foods coming regularly, which maintains body weight, deepens that chocolate coloration, and goes a long way toward keeping the peace with tankmates.
