Blueline Trigger (Psuedobalistes Fuscus)
Blueline Triggerfish
Also Known As: Blue and Gold Triggerfish, Yellowspotted Triggerfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Blueline Triggerfish (Pseudobalistes fuscus) is a knockout, developing an intricate network of electric-blue lines over a yellowish to brown body, with younger specimens sometimes retaining dark saddle-like markings across the back. The deep, laterally compressed body carries a prominent locking dorsal spine and blue-edged fins, and the tail develops pointed upper and lower lobes with maturity, while older adults may turn predominantly blue-gray, so the fish keeps changing as it ages. It’s an inquisitive, powerful forager that explores crevices, moves loose decor, and investigates everything with strong teeth, and that combination is why it’s firmly not reef safe. Corals, ornamental crustaceans, mollusks, and other inverts may all become food. Large, robust fish of comparable size and disposition are the only sensible companions, since this species grows increasingly territorial and can’t be trusted with small or timid tankmates. Keep one trigger per tank, and consider a dedicated display if aggression develops. Avoid hand-feeding and stay aware of its location during maintenance, since an individual may bite.
Aquarium Requirements
A spacious FOWLR tank of 150 gallons or larger is recommended for the 2 to 6 inch specimens offered, with a larger long-term system planned as the fish grows. Prioritize a long, wide footprint with generous turning room, open swimming lanes, and substantial caves for shelter. Secure your rockwork firmly and protect exposed tubing and equipment from chewing or displacement, since this is a strong, destructive fish when it wants to be. Powerful filtration, vigorous circulation, and good oxygenation help keep up with its activity and substantial feeding demands. Offer varied, appropriately sized foods rather than leaning on a single frozen item.
