Key Facts
Also Known As (AKA): Achilles Surgeonfish, Red-Tailed Surgeon
Compatibility, Behavior, and Environment: The Achilles Tang can be aggressive towards other Tangs, so we recommend this being one of the last Tang additions to your tank to avoid aggression. It is overall peaceful toward other compatibly-sized fish species and is generally reef-safe. This species is best suited for larger aquariums where it can establish a territory of its own, with plenty of live rock for grazing. Primarily a herbivore, the Achilles Tang diet consists of algae, nori (seaweed), and meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp.
We bring DOZENS of Achilles Tangs at a time DIRECT from Tahiti! We will only ship specimens that have been observed eating and are free of any visible issues, and we do an extended mild-quarantine protocol of at least 7 days in copper and hyposalinity. Aside from the great price, see why we are well-known as the best supplier for Achilles Tangs!
Aquarium Requirements:
A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended for the Hybrid Achilles Tang to grow and accommodate its need for wide swimming areas and territories. Ideally, the tank should have a minimum length of 5 feet, as Achilles Tangs need a lot of swimming space. It is crucial to maintain strong water flow and a high level of oxygen, so it helps to ensure that you have a large skimmer to facilitate high oxygen levels. The tank layout should include plenty of rockwork and a consistent source of algae and seaweed. The aforementioned strong water flow, high oxygen levels, and excellent water quality are crucial to keep this fish thriving.
