Bluejaw Trigger (Female) (Xanthichthys Auromarginatus)
Also Known As: Blue Throat Triggerfish, Gilded Triggerfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Female Bluejaw Triggerfish (Xanthichthys auromarginatus) is the subtler counterpart to the flashy male, and a lovely fish in its own right. Featuring a lavender-gray to light brown shade, female Bluejaws also have the unmistakable laterally compressed profile and shallowly notched tail typical of the family. She lacks the male’s blue throat patch and bright yellow fin margins, which is the easy way to tell the sexes apart. Like the male, this is a natural open-water plankton feeder, which makes it one of the more mild-mannered triggers for a spacious community. It generally leaves corals alone, but treat it as reef safe with caution, since ornamental shrimp, hermit crabs, snails, and other small inverts may be eaten. Similarly sized, moderately assertive fish make suitable companions, while very small, timid fish and aggressive triggers are less dependable matches. A female can be kept on her own, so a male isn’t necessary for her well-being.
Aquarium Requirements
A mature tank of 100 gallons or larger is recommended, combining generous open swimming lanes with substantial live rock arranged into caves and deep crevices. Those secure retreats matter most during introduction and overnight, when this trigger may wedge itself into the rockwork. Provide good circulation, oxygenation, and efficient filtration to handle regular meaty feedings. A newly introduced female may hide or hesitate to feed at first, so offer small portions near her retreat and keep an eye on intake, making sure established fish don’t monopolize the food.
