Foxface (Siganus Vulpinus)
Also Known As: Foxface Rabbitfish, Foxface Lo
Compatibility and Behavior The Foxface is one of the most useful and recognizable fish in the marine hobby. If you have an algae problem, this species is one of the best candidates to take care of the issue. The body is a bright yellow set against a pale white to cream chest, with a bold black fox-like mask running across the face that gives the species its name. A high, sail-like dorsal fin completes the silhouette and makes this fish stand out in both mixed reefs and fish-only systems. Behavior-wise, Foxfaces are generally peaceful and fit well with a wide range of community tankmates, though they may posture or flare their fins when they feel threatened or crowded. They're considered reef safe with caution. Foxface do beautifully in mixed reefs, focusing their grazing on hair algae, film algae, and assorted nuisance growth, while some may nip at fleshy LPS or soft corals if underfed or if algae is in short supply. They also carry venomous dorsal spines, which they may raise defensively when stressed. Most tankmates learn pretty quickly to give them space, and the spines aren't an issue once the fish settles in.
Note on stress coloration: Foxface will show a mottled, discolored look when stressed and upon arrival. This is normal and will subside as they settle in provided the environment is peaceful.
Aquarium Requirements Foxfaces do best in medium to large, well-established aquariums with ample swimming room and plenty of rockwork for grazing and hiding. A long footprint with open water in front of the aquascape is ideal, since these fish like to cruise across the tank picking at algae throughout the day. They appreciate stable conditions, moderate to strong flow, and a scape with caves or overhangs where they can retreat and darken their colors at night or when something startles them. Because they're constant grazers, a tank with natural algae growth supplemented with sheets of nori and other marine greens will keep them healthy and focused on nuisance algae rather than corals. Take some care when working in the tank, since the venomous spines can deliver a painful sting if mishandled.
