Gold Rimmed Tang EXPERT (Acanthurus Nigricans)
Also Known As: Whitecheek Tang, Gold-Rim Tang
Compatibility and Behavior:
The Gold-Rimmed Tang (Acanthurus nigricans) is a sleek, high-energy grazer that brings a refined, high-contrast accent to an established display. The deep charcoal-to-black body is outlined by a thin golden rim along the dorsal and anal fins, set against a clean white cheek patch, a pale breast, and a tail tipped in soft blue-white. A bright yellow dorsal patch and delicate blue fin edging round out a look that reads almost formal when the fish is on the move. On temperament, Gold-Rimmed Tangs are generally semi-aggressive and can be quite assertive toward other tangs and similarly shaped algae grazers, especially in tighter quarters. They're typically reef safe, spending most of the day browsing film and filamentous algae off rock and hard surfaces rather than corals or ornamental inverts, though an underfed or stressed fish may occasionally nip. This is a species that can be sensitive and prone to stress-related ailments, so it does best with calm, non-bullying tankmates in a system where overall aggression and crowding are kept to a minimum.
Aquarium Requirements:
or small to medium Gold-Rimmed Tangs in the 2 to 3.5 inch range, a minimum around 90 to 100 gallons with a long, open footprint is the right starting point, with larger systems strongly preferred as the fish matures. Aquascape with mature live rock arranged into open swimming lanes, gentle arches, and a few deep caves or overhangs where the tang can retreat and sleep. Strong, turbulent flow and excellent gas exchange are important, since this is an active, oxygen-demanding species that responds best to clean, very stable water backed by robust filtration and consistent husbandry. A tight-fitting lid or mesh top is advisable, as these tangs can dart quickly when startled and may jump. Frequent offerings of nori, marine algae, and varied herbivore foods will help reduce stress, support immunity, and keep that golden edging and white cheek patch looking crisp.
