Compatibility and Behavior
The Juvenile Blue Eye Tang (Ctenochaetus binotatus) is a small, busy bristletooth that comes through with a surprising splash of color you won't see in the adults. Young specimens often start out a warm yellow to yellow-tan across the body and fins, then gradually transition into the more subdued brown-tan adult coloration with fine speckling and that signature blue ring around the eye as they mature. It's one of the more rewarding color shifts in the hobby, letting you watch the fish move from a bright juvenile yellow phase into its refined Blue Eye adult look over time. Temperament-wise, these juveniles tend to be peaceful to semi-aggressive and are often less combative than many of the larger surgeonfish, especially when given room and plenty of rockwork. They're typically reef safe, spending most of the day picking film algae, diatoms, and detritus off rock, glass, and other hard surfaces rather than bothering corals or ornamental inverts. They may posture a bit toward other tangs when kept in tight spaces, particularly other Ctenochaetus or similarly shaped grazers, but in most cases they coexist well with community tankmates like clownfish, wrasses, Anthias, gobies, and smaller reef-safe fish in a thoughtfully stocked system.

Aquarium Requirements
Juvenile Blue Eyes do best in mature reef aquariums with ample live rock and a steady supply of biofilm and microalgae to graze on as they grow out of their yellow phase. A tank in the 50 gallon range is a solid baseline for small juveniles, with larger volumes and a long footprint preferred for long-term care and particularly if you're keeping other tangs. Aquascape with open swimming lanes and porous rock that creates ledges, caves, and shaded areas where the fish can retreat and feel secure, while maximizing surface area for algae growth. Moderate to strong, well-oxygenated flow and solid filtration will support their active grazing lifestyle. Supplement their natural foraging with regular feedings of nori, spirulina-based foods, and quality herbivore fare to keep them well nourished, and keep territorial behavior in check.
