Compatibility and Behavior
The Canary Fang Blenny (Meiacanthus oualanensis) is exactly what the name promises: a solid, brilliant lemon-yellow fish, bright enough to pop against live rock and coral the moment it goes in. It's got a slim, torpedo-shaped body, an elegant forked tail, large alert eyes, and smooth scaleless skin that give it a sleek, streamlined look, with males sometimes deepening in color during courtship. What really sets it apart from most blennies is how it lives: instead of perching on the rocks and hopping around, the Canary Fang spends much of its time out in open water, hovering and darting through the middle of the tank like a much more confident fish. That habit makes it a standout swimmer that quickly learns to come up for food and spends much of its time in the forefront of the tank. It's generally peaceful toward a wide range of tankmates and ignores the cleanup crew entirely, though it may get territorial with other similarly shaped blennies or fang blennies, so keep just one per tank unless you have a very large system. It's reef safe, with only the occasional nip at SPS or clam mantles, and even that is uncommon and usually tied to underfeeding or cramped quarters.

One thing worth knowing about the fang blennies in general: that "fang" is real. Meiacanthus species have venomous canines they use strictly for defense, which makes them remarkably safe from would-be predators, since a fish that tries to eat one quickly spits it back out and learns its lesson. It makes the Canary a bold, secure little fish that's rarely bullied.

Aquarium Requirements
This is a fairly easygoing fish, so the setup is straightforward. A tank around 30 gallons or larger suits it well, with a mix of open swimming space for its mid-water cruising and ample live rock arranged into caves, ledges, and crevices for sleeping and retreat. It appreciates moderate water movement that keeps food suspended without creating chaotic flow, and it settles in best in a mature tank with established rockwork and a bit of light algae growth for supplemental grazing. The one non-negotiable is a tight-fitting lid or mesh screen, since fang blennies are excellent jumpers that slip through surprisingly small gaps, especially when startled or newly acclimated. Give it a varied diet and calm tankmates and it becomes one of the more visible, personable fish in the display.
