The Ladder Glider (Valenciennea sexguttata) is a subtle beauty and a hard worker rolled into one. A pale white to translucent body is highlighted by delicate light blue spots, and under reef lighting those markings shimmer against its sleek profile. What it does all day is the real appeal: gliding over the sand, taking in mouthfuls of substrate and expelling clean grains through its gills as it sorts out small crustaceans and organic bits, which keeps the upper sand layer bright and aerated. It's generally peaceful and reef safe, rarely bothering unrelated tankmates.
Aquarium Requirements
The sand bed is the make-or-break element here. It wants a mature tank of around 30 gallons or larger with a fine, soft bed at least 2 to 3 inches deep, ideally sugar-sized grains rather than coarse gravel or crushed coral, since the substrate has to pass through its gills without damaging the delicate tissue. Give it plenty of open sand flats to forage over plus stable rock islands for shelter and sleeping. A tight-fitting, gap-free lid is essential, as it's a known jumper, especially when stressed or newly introduced. Offer frozen mysis, enriched brine, finely chopped seafood, live blackworms, and quality sinking pellets several times a day.
