African Kole Tang (Ctenochaetus Truncatus)
Also Known As: African Bristletooth Tang, African Kole Tang
Compatibility and Behavior
For a lot of longtime reefers, the African Kole Tang (Ctenochaetus truncatus) is the consolation prize that turned out to be just as good. With Hawaiian reef fish collection effectively shut down, the classic Hawaiian Kole Tang (Ctenochaetus strigosus) has become genuinely scarce, and this African cousin has stepped in as the closest stand-in the trade has. The two share the same compact bristletooth build and earthy brown base, and the easiest way to tell them apart is the tail: the African Kole shows a slightly paler, more squared-off tail, where the Hawaiian's blends more smoothly into the body. On its own merits it is a tidy, good-looking fish, warm brown to charcoal with fine speckling or faint horizontal streaking, a lighter face, and a soft golden or violet sheen under reef lighting that never overpowers the aquascape. Temperament tends peaceful to semi-aggressive, and many find it more manageable than the larger, showier surgeonfish. It is reef safe in practice, working film algae, diatoms, and detritus off rock and glass all day rather than bothering corals or inverts, though it can get territorial toward other Ctenochaetus and similarly shaped grazers, so pair those particular tankmates thoughtfully.
Aquarium Requirements
Like its bristletooth relatives, this fish depends on a mature tank with a steady supply of biofilm and microalgae, so an established system with plenty of live rock keeps it grazing happily. For small to medium specimens in the 1.5 to 3 inch range, a tank around 70 to 90 gallons with a long footprint is a solid starting point, with larger systems preferred as it grows and for any multi-tang plans. Aquascape with open swimming lanes and porous, ledge-and-cave rockwork that maximizes grazing surface and offers shaded retreats. The rest is routine: moderate to strong, well-oxygenated flow, solid filtration, and stable water quality. Round out its constant picking with regular nori, spirulina-based herbivore foods, and quality frozen fare to keep it well fed, hold down territorial behavior, and maintain that subtle patterning.
