Harlequin Tusk EXPERT (Choerodon Fasciatus)
Also Known As: Harlequin Wrasse
Compatibility, Behavior, and Environment
The Harlequin Tusk, is renowned for its vibrant orange coloration, featuring an orange body with silver stripes, and hints of blue around the tail. This species is generally semi-aggressive and best suited for large Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) aquariums. While juveniles tend to be shy, adults will grow to be more confident and are full of personality.
Harlequin Tusks are not considered reef safe, as they will consume most ornamental invertebrates—including shrimp, snails, starfish, and even sea urchins—but rarely harm corals themselves. Suitable companions include robust tangs, angelfish, and larger wrasses, but only one Harlequin Tusk should be housed per tank due to their territorial nature.
These Harlequin Tusks are from Indonesia. They are NOT Australian Tusks. which are much larger and feature more blue coloration, including the famous blue teeth. They are also significantly more expensive. The Indonesian Tusks we receive from our small supplier in Bali are very colorful and still have that awesome Harlequin Tusk personality, but will not feature bright blue teeth like the Aussie Tusks.
Aquarium Requirements
This fish requires a minimum tank size of 110–125 gallons, featuring ample live rock, caves, and overhangs for hiding and swimming. A sandy substrate supports natural behaviors, and a secure lid helps prevent rare jumping incidents. Maintain strong biological and mechanical filtration, as Harlequin Wrasses produce significant waste and need high water quality. Bright, mixed-spectrum lighting showcases its vivid colors, but there are no specific lighting demands.
