Harlequin Tusk EXPERT (Choerodon Fasciatus)
Also Known As: Harlequin Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior The Harlequin Tusk is a fish with real presence — an orange body marked with silver stripes and hints of blue around the tail, and a personality that grows into those looks over time. Juveniles tend to be on the shyer side, but adults develop into confident, characterful fish that become a focal point of any tank they're in. This is a semi-aggressive species best suited to a large FOWLR setup with robust tankmates — think tangs, angelfish, and larger wrasses that can hold their own. Only one Tusk per tank; they're territorial toward conspecifics.
Reef safe it is not. Harlequin Tusks will make short work of most ornamental invertebrates. Shrimp, snails, starfish, and even sea urchins are all on the menu. Corals, however, are generally left alone, so a species-appropriate FOWLR with no prized inverts is the sweet spot.
A quick but important note on origin: these are Indonesian Tusks sourced from our supplier in Bali, not Australian Tusks. The difference matters. Aussie Tusks tend to run larger, carry more blue coloration overall, and are known for their distinctive blue teeth — and they're priced accordingly. Our Indonesian specimens are genuinely colorful and full of that classic Harlequin personality, but they will not have the bright blue teeth that Australian fish are famous for.
Aquarium Requirements This is a big fish with a big appetite and a correspondingly significant bioload, so a minimum of 110–125 gallons with strong biological and mechanical filtration is the baseline. The aquascape should offer ample live rock with caves and overhangs to satisfy its instinct to explore and claim territory, along with a sandy substrate that supports natural behaviors. A secure lid is a sensible precaution, though jumping is not a frequent concern with this species. Lighting has no specific demands — bright mixed-spectrum works well and does a nice job showcasing the coloration, but this fish isn't fussy about it. Feed meaty offerings like shrimp, mussels, squid, chopped fish, and quality marine pellets to keep it thriving.
