Rusty Angel (Centropyge Ferrugata)
Also Known As: Rusty Pygmy Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior The Rusty Angel brings a warm, earthy color palette that stands out in a hobby full of blues and yellows. The body is a rich burnt-orange to rusty red covered in small black speckles concentrated along the upper flanks, giving it a peppered appearance that looks more textured than most dwarf angels. The dorsal and anal fins are edged in bright blue, and the tail runs dusky to orange, a subtle contrast that catches the eye nicely under reef lighting. Temperament is fairly typical for the genus: semi-aggressive with a territorial streak, particularly toward other dwarf angels or similarly shaped fish in smaller systems. It generally gets along well with a range of small to medium community fish like tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and robust gobies, but timid species can get pushed around at feeding time or chased away from preferred hiding spots. One dwarf angel per tank is the standard recommendation in systems under 100 gallons.
Reef safety follows the usual Centropyge pattern. Many hobbyists keep Rusty Angels in mixed reefs without coral issues, but the species does graze on sponges and occasional coral polyps in the wild, and some individuals will nip at LPS, soft corals, or clam mantles in captivity, especially if underfed. Frequent varied feeding and a mature reef with plenty of natural grazing surfaces go a long way toward keeping that behavior in check.
Aquarium Requirements
The Rusty Angel does best in a mature system with abundant live rock arranged into caves, ledges, and crevices for grazing and retreat. A 55-gallon tank is the practical minimum, giving this territorial species enough space to stake out its own area and reducing friction with tankmates. Rockwork should create multiple distinct zones and shaded pockets. This is a naturally cautious fish that ducks into cover quickly when startled, and having those retreats readily available keeps it calmer and more visible overall. A tight-fitting lid or mesh screen is worth having in place. Like most dwarf angels, this one can jump when chased or spooked. Feed a varied diet built around sponge-based angelfish formulas, spirulina, nori, mysis, finely chopped marine seafood, and quality pellets. Consistent varied feeding is the single best thing you can do for long-term health and coral safety.
