Dogface Puffer (Arothron Nigropunctatus)
Also Known As: Blackspotted Puffer
Compatibility and Behavior
If there is a fish that turns skeptics into puffer people, it is the Dogface. This is the classic "wet pet," an intelligent, personable fish that learns to recognize its keeper and comes to the front glass to beg at feeding time. The rounded body, big expressive eyes, and that unmistakable dog-like face give it enormous charm, and color forms range from soft gray with dark spots to more mottled or yellowish patterns, sometimes with a contrasting mask around the eyes and mouth. It is a slow, deliberate swimmer that patrols the rockwork, interacts with you, and rests between bursts of activity like it owns the place. Now the honest part: this is not a reef-safe fish. Dogface Puffers are built around strong crushing beaks made for hard-shelled prey, and they will nip or eat snails, crabs, shrimp, and clams, and pick at soft corals, which puts them firmly in fish-only or FOWLR territory. That beak comes with a quirky side effect, too, as a bored or underfed puffer may chew on power cords or plastic fittings, so it pays to keep them fed and occupied. They generally get along with other moderately robust fish like tangs, larger wrasses, and angels given enough space, but being curious and a little clumsy, they do best with tankmates that are neither overly delicate nor prone to fin-nipping.
Aquarium Requirements
Give this fish space, clean water, and strong filtration and it will reward you for years. For specimens in the 2 to 4 inch range, a tank around 120 gallons is a realistic minimum, with larger volumes strongly preferred as they grow toward adult size. Aquascape with sturdy rock and secure caves or overhangs where the puffer can rest and feel safe, and steer clear of sharp or unstable decor that could hurt it if it bumps or inflates. Filtration and gas exchange matter more here than with many fish, since puffers are messy eaters with a hefty bioload, so plan on robust filtration and regular water changes. Feeding is part husbandry, part dentistry: offer meaty foods like shrimp, clam, squid, and krill, and include hard-shelled items such as crab or clam on the half shell to help wear that constantly growing beak down. A couple of practical notes round it out. A tight-fitting lid is wise since a startled puffer can dash suddenly, and keeping conditions stable and stress-free helps avoid the risk of it gulping air, which is genuinely dangerous for the fish.
Specifications
Approximate Size: Sm: 2–3", Md: 3–4", Lg: 4–5"

Minimum Tank Size: 120 gallons for small specimens, with a larger system required as it grows
