Purple Tang EXPERT (Zebrasoma Xanthurum)
Also Known As: Yellowtail Purple Tang
Compatibility and Behavior
The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is about as much of a showpiece as the genus gets, all rich color and constant motion. The body is a deep royal purple, often peppered with fine darker speckles, set against a bright yellow tail and yellow highlights on the pectoral fins that really glow under strong reef lighting. Add the tall, disc-shaped body and sail-like dorsal fin, and you've got that unmistakable Zebrasoma silhouette that anchors a display the moment it's in the water. Temperament is where you have to plan ahead. Purple Tangs tend to be semi-aggressive and can be quite assertive, particularly toward other tangs and similarly shaped algae grazers, so adding one towards the end of your stocking plan will help manage that.
They're typically reef safe, spending most of the day grazing film and filamentous algae off rock and hard surfaces rather than picking at corals or ornamental inverts, though an underfed or stressed individual may occasionally nip. With careful stocking and room to roam, they usually settle in well alongside robust community fish like clownfish, fairy and flasher wrasses, Anthias, and chromis, often becoming one of the dominant but still manageable personalities in the tank.
Aquarium Requirements
Purple Tangs do best in mature reef aquariums with ample swimming space and established live rock to graze. For small to medium specimens in the 1.5 to 3 inch range, a tank at least 120 gallons with a long footprint is a solid starting point, with larger systems preferred for 3 to 4 inch adults and long-term comfort. Aquascape with open cruising lanes and a stable rock structure that creates arches, ledges, and shaded retreats where the fish can wedge itself at night or when startled, while maximizing surface area for algae and biofilm growth. Strong, well-oxygenated flow and robust filtration help support their active lifestyle and will keep water quality stable. Regular feedings of nori, marine algae, and high-quality herbivore foods will keep them well nourished, help curb aggression, and maintain that vivid purple body and bright yellow tail.
