Two Spot Hogfish (Bodianus Bimaculatus)
Also Known As: Twinspot Hogfish, Twospot Slender Hogfish
Compatibility and Behavior The Two Spot Hogfish is a lively, torpedo-shaped reef fish that brings real movement and color to the mid and lower water column. The body shows a warm pink to orange center wrapped in bright yellow, with two distinct dark spots, one near the gill area and a second toward the rear near the dorsal or caudal base. Fine speckling and clean fin edges give it a sleek, refined look as it darts in and out of rockwork. Personality-wise this is a semi-aggressive species that can develop a territorial streak as it matures, particularly toward smaller, similarly shaped fish or new additions to the tank. It's usually compatible with other medium-sized, confident community fish, but it may harass very shy or tiny tankmates. Two Spot Hogfish are considered reef safe with caution. They generally ignore corals, but once settled in they may prey on small ornamental shrimp, crabs, and other bite-sized invertebrates.
Aquarium Requirements A mature marine aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices is the right home, providing both security and natural hunting routes. A tank with a generous footprint and broken sightlines really helps reduce territorial pressure and gives this active swimmer the room it needs to cruise comfortably throughout the aquascape. Moderate to strong flow paired with solid filtration suits both the energetic nature of the fish and the meaty diet it relies on. This species adapts well to a wide variety of lighting styles and works equally well in mixed reefs or FOWLR systems, as long as the rockwork is substantial and offers ample hiding spots. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, krill, and quality marine carnivore pellets to keep this fish robust, colorful, and less likely to take out boredom or hunger on tankmates.
