Fiji Leopard Wrasse EXPERT (Macropharyngodon Melagris)
Also Known As: Guinea Fowl Wrasse, Blackspotted Wrasse
Compatibility and Behavior
The Fiji Leopard Wrasse is a striking, active sand-sleeper wrasse that spends its day picking at live rock and sand in search of tiny crustaceans and other natural foods. It is generally peaceful and is an excellent candidate for reef aquariums. For best long-term success, it is typically recommended for established reef tanks with calm, non-aggressive tank mates; boisterous or bullying species may cause this wrasse to hide or go off food. Note that we only receive females, unfortunately males are rarely found in circulation.
Like all Leopard Wrasses, this is a more difficult species that not only requires a deep sandbed for natural burrowing, but is in general a more sensitive species. Ideally, it’s best to introduce and establish any Leopard Wrasses first before introducing more boisterous and larger fish to give the best chances of success. That way your Leopard Wrasse can establish itself and get used to eating prepared foods before more competitive fish are brought into the picture. You may keep multiple Leopard Wrasses in the same display tank, but introducing them simultaneously is ideal to reduce chances of aggression.
Aquarium Requirements
The Fiji Leopard Wrasse appreciates a mature, stable reef system with at least 90 gallons of swimming space and plenty of live rock for constant foraging. Provide a rockscape with caves, overhangs, and shaded areas so the fish can retreat and feel secure between feeding and foraging bouts.
A soft, fine sand bed of at least a couple of inches is essential to their survival, as this species dives into the substrate at night and when startled; barren, coarse, or sharp substrates can cause injury and stress as they will constantly try to burrow into it.
