Compatibility and Behavior
The African Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas) breaks the blenny mold in the best way. Instead of perching on the rocks and hopping between spots like most of its relatives, this glowing golden-orange fish spectacularly swims fluidly out in open water, hovering and darting through the mid-tank with an eel-like grace that reads much more like an anthias than a blenny. Big expressive eyes, an elegant lyre-shaped tail, and a subtle blue sheen around the face finish the look. It'll even loosely "school" with anthias or share their water-column zone, and once it settles it becomes a bold, visible presence. Temperament is generally peaceful and it's reef safe, mixing well with calm community fish like clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and cardinals, though it can get territorial toward other blennies or similarly shaped yellow fish in tighter quarters.

Stress Coloration: this species shows stress coloration, taking on a mottled, blotchy "bruised banana" look with darker patches or streaks when it's newly introduced, frightened, or stressed. That color shift is completely normal for the fish and typically fades back to a rich, even gold once it has a secure hiding spot, stable water, and a predictable feeding routine.

Aquarium Requirements
This is an easygoing fish with one firm requirement. A tank around 30 gallons or larger suits it well, with plenty of live rock, caves, and tight crevices it can claim as a safe bolt-hole, plus a mix of open swimming lanes and sheltered pockets, since it spends more time in mid-water than most blennies but still bolts to the rocks when startled or resting. Moderate flow is ideal. The non-negotiable is a secure, gap-free lid or mesh top, since this is a known jumper, especially during acclimation or if it's chased. A mature, stable reef with consistent water quality does double duty here, keeping the fish healthy and minimizing that stress coloration so it holds the bright gold tones that make it so desirable. Feed a varied diet of meaty planktonic foods like mysis, enriched brine, and finely chopped seafood alongside algae-based flakes, pellets, and nori.
