Compatibility and Behavior
The Alligator Pipefish (Syngnathoides biaculeatus) is the heftiest pipefish in the trade, with a thick, angular body that tapers into a tail so slender and prehensile that both ends look nearly identical, hence the double-ended nickname. Coloration is habitat-matched camouflage in mottled green, brown, or gray with darker markings. Unlike most pipefish, it has no caudal fin at all, relying instead on that gripping tail to anchor itself to seagrass, macroalgae, and gorgonian branches, where it hangs motionless and blends in almost perfectly. Rather than swimming purposefully, it drifts and hovers on rapid fluttering of the small dorsal fin, spending most of the day hitched to a chosen holdfast. It's reef safe and completely harmless to corals and cleanup crew, feeding only on tiny crustaceans drawn in through its long tubular snout. The risk actually runs the other way: anemones, corals with strong stinging tentacles or sweepers, large hermits, crabs, and big shrimp can all injure a slow-moving pipefish, so leave those out. This is an expert-only species, and the reason is feeding, since a faster swimmer may strip the water column before it can eat. It thrives best surrounded by equally deliberate feeders, so seahorses, other pipefish, mandarin dragonets, and similarly slow small gobies make the best company, while tangs, damsels, wrasses, and dottybacks are poor matches. It's sociable with its own kind and can be kept in pairs or small groups. One quirk to note: when threatened, these fish are jumpers, so make sure you have a lid.

Aquarium Requirements
A mature tank of 30 to 40 gallons works for a pair, with larger footprints preferred for groups, and maturity matters more than volume since a well-established system supports the microfauna these fish graze between feedings. Aquascape with a seagrass-meadow theme to mirror the sheltered bays and lagoons it comes from, and since true seagrasses are demanding, planting Caulerpa prolifera so the rhizoids spread across the substrate is a proven substitute, supplemented with tall macroalgae, branching gorgonians, and artificial plants to create abundant hitching posts. Very gentle flow is essential, as these are weak swimmers easily tired by strong current, and all pump and overflow intakes should be screened. A connected fishless refugium producing copepods and amphipods pays real dividends for long-term success. Feed at least two to three times daily, dispensing food upstream so the current carries it slowly past the fish rather than dropping it in one spot, and start new arrivals on enriched live adult brine or tiny live grass shrimp several times a day until they recognize frozen mysis and krill. Keep the tank in a quiet, low-traffic spot, stay diligent with water quality and regular changes, and use a snug lid with no gaps.
