Asfur Angel (Pomacanthus Asfur)
Also Known As: Arabian Angelfish, Half-Moon Angelfish
Compatibility and Behavior
The Asfur Angel is one of the more dramatic-looking fish in the Pomacanthus genus. The body is a deep navy to purple-blue with a jet-black face, a bright yellow tail, and a bold crescent-shaped yellow band sweeping diagonally across the midsection. Adults develop long, flowing dorsal and anal fins edged in blue that give the fish a regal, sail-like profile as it cruises the rockwork. It's a genuinely commanding presence in a large display.
Temperament tends toward semi-aggressive to aggressive, and newly introduced Asfurs can be surprisingly shy before settling in and asserting themselves. Once established, they become increasingly territorial, particularly toward other large angelfish. Sturdy tangs, large wrasses, and similarly sized fish generally fare well as tankmates, but very small or timid species can have a rough time in confined systems. Reef safety is a straightforward no. Their natural diet is rich in sponges and tunicates, and most individuals will nip at soft and stony corals, zoanthids, and clam mantles in captivity. This is a fish built for FOWLR and large mixed predator or community systems. Worth keeping in mind: Asfurs are long-lived fish, often reaching 10 to 15 years or more with proper care, which makes them a meaningful long-term commitment.
Aquarium Requirements
The Asfur Angel needs a serious, mature setup. Around 135 to 150 gallons is the practical minimum for a single adult, and 180 gallons or more is strongly preferred for long-term comfort, especially alongside other large fish. The aquascape should include tall rockwork, caves, and overhangs where a newly introduced fish can retreat and decompress, while open swimming lanes around the perimeter give it room to cruise as it settles in and gains confidence. Strong, stable filtration is non-negotiable. A powerful protein skimmer, robust biological filtration, and high, well-oxygenated flow are all important for managing the bioload this large omnivorous grazer puts on a system. Diet should be varied and consistent: sponge-based angelfish preparations as the foundation, supplemented with marine algae and nori, spirulina, mysis, and finely chopped seafood or quality pellets. Feeding two to three times daily supports healthy growth and coloration, and keeps this fish engaged enough to leave the rockwork decor alone.
